Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy

~Leo Buscaglia

With million of Americans suffering from one anxiety disorder or another, this mental illness is considered one of the most predominate and costly in the country. An estimated $22 billion is spent on anxiety related problems each year. Understanding and tackling anxiety can lead to a life free of physical and psychological ailments.

Anxiety is a normal response to danger or stress. Anxiety is only a problem when it is out of proportion to a situation or goes on for too long. If this happens, our thoughts become muddled and we experience physical symptoms such as rapid breathing, racing heart, sweaty palms, and tense muscles.

Anxiety can be quite damaging to our lives, both physically and emotionally. Physical changes over time can lead to ill
health. Psychological changes can lead to an inability to function and perform normal duties like working, going to school, and taking care of our duties as mother, wife, father or husband.

Physical Symptoms. There are the physical manifestations that, over time, can lead to ill health. For example, ...

~ Tense muscles can cause headaches.

~ Gastrointestinal problems like irritable bowel syndrome can occur.

~ Endless colds and general poor health can be the result of an anxiety compromised immune system. In the longer term, an immune system that is constantly compromised may increase the risk of cancer. In addition, anxiety can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems and changes in circulation.

Psychological Symptoms.
The psychological changes caused by anxiety can be equally costly. One of the first things to disappear if you are anxious is creativity. Your ability to problem solve
and overcome difficulties effectively is also compromised. This can, in turn, lead to greater stress and hence more anxiety. We become irritable and this affects relationships.

One of the starting points in tackling anxiety is to start to become aware of what it is you are really anxious about. This can be difficult to do on your own but keeping a diary of your symptoms and then noting what events or thoughts were happening at the time often helps. Becoming aware of triggering events may help you to make changes that help you deal with them.

Key Aspects of Anxiety. There are two key aspects of anxiety - avoidance and generalizing your anxiety.

Avoidance. You will tend to avoid anxiety-provoking situations because this will seem like it is reducing the severity of your symptoms [and indeed it does, temporarily.]
