Cayenne Wellness Center's Annual Sickle Cell Disease Educational Seminar is a two and half day seminar designed to address the multi-factorial aspects of sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait awareness and education. This year has been shaped by the state of our healthcare system and the opioid crisis sweeping our country, and the seminar focuses on Integrative Medicine and Alternative Treatments.  In addition to presentations on the the pathophysiology, complications, management and treatment of sickle cell disease, the seminar will present on the latest scientific and clinical information related to the disease. On Thursday, we will hear from those who will assist patients with political self-advocacy (during our Legislative Action Workshop), followed by an opioid crisis panel of physicians and patients.  On Friday, we will hear from our first Keynote Speaker - Dr. Elliott Vichinsky, followed by presentations on alternative treatments for pain management, Lunch with the Experts, and dealing with the loss of loved one. Friday ends with our network reception featuring the smooth sounds Private Practice. On Saturday, we begin with our second Keynote Speaker - Cage Johnson, MD, followed by a multimodal approach including nutrition and cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT).  In the afternoon, we have a public policy session followed by complications of sickle cell disease (lupus, blood clots, and infection). We end the seminar with a healing session and announcement of the 11th Annual Sickle Cell Disease Educational Seminar.

This year’s seminar offers an array of exciting activities designed to educate and motivate the entire community to get involved in the fight against sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait education and awareness.
