Dr. Kristyl JL Smith-Brown is a Los Angeles native and sickle cell warrior (type SC).  She had the privilege of being seen at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles under the care of Dr. T. Hofstra. Although CHLA provided excellent care, there was not a fully established transition program when she turned 18 in 2009. Dr. Smith-Brown knows all too well the challenging effects of learning how to navigate medical care as a young adult with an invisible disease. Despite these challenges and nearly losing her life to sickle cell in 2018, Dr. Smith-Brown now holds a Doctor of Organizational Psychology and Management. She is also an Adjunct Psychology Professor at Glendale Community College and is honored to serve as the Grants Project Manager at The Cayenne Wellness Center.
