California’s Sickle Cell Warriors Need Your Voice.
California is investing in sickle cell treatment. But treatment alone is not enough. Sickle Cell Warriors also need the transportation, mental health support, patient advocacy, care coordination, and emergency assistance that help them reach care, navigate it, and remain stable after they leave.

California must fund both sickle cell treatment and sickle cell survival.
Centers of Excellence provide clinical care. Cayenne Wellness Center provides the care coordination that helps Sickle Cell Warriors schedule and reach treatment, advocate for the care they deserve, navigate emergency room visits, maintain stability, and survive crises that happen outside hospital walls.
For more than 25 years, Cayenne Wellness Center has provided statewide, community-based support for people and families living with sickle cell disease. The organization is asking California to include $15 million over three years to sustain these services as federal support ends.
California should not fund the hospital door while leaving warriors without the support they need to reach it, navigate it, and remain stable after they leave.

California’s current sickle cell investment is not complete without community-based survival support.
Federal support for key community-based sickle cell services ends in August 2026. Cayenne Wellness Center is seeking continued state investment so transportation, counseling, point-of-care advocacy, caregiver education, crisis support, and resource navigation do not disappear while California expands clinical treatment.
Patients with sickle cell deserve to do more than survive. They deserve a chance to thrive.

On August 14, Sickle Cell Warriors, families, and advocates gathered in Sacramento to call for continued state investment in the health care infrastructure and support services they rely on to survive and thrive.
The effort was led by Cayenne Wellness Center and supported by organizations including the NAACP California Hawaii State Conference, Black Women Organized for Political Action California, and other sickle cell advocacy organizations.
Now California’s Budget Leaders need to see that this community is still watching, still speaking, and still asking the state not to walk away.
