Nutrition – Part 3

It’s no secret that what we put in our bodies affects how we feel, how we function, and even how we heal. As Sickle Cell Warriors, it matters even more, because we are at higher risk of malnutrition and anemia. During this session, we’ll discuss the best ways to get all the nutrients your unique body needs, and dietary considerations to make. Shirley D. Powell, Doctor of Naturopathy and founder of Temple Care International Ministries, will lead the discussion with Dr. Marjorie Dejoie Brewer, founder of M.A.D. Fit–a medical consulting and health & wellness company–and Claudine Matthews, a Registered Dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council in the UK.

She owns MAD Fit, a medical consulting and Wellness & Health business, and currently holds the position of Medical Director of hemoglobinopathies in Global Medical Affairs and Global Strategist at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, and Medical Director for the Sickle Cell Association of Delaware.

In 1956, Shirley Powell was born with a potentially life-threatening hereditary condition: sickle cell disease. For 33 years, she suffered tremendously with debilitating and painful crises, secondary illnesses, dozens and dozens of hospitalizations, and various surgeries. She also previously suffered from hypothyroidism, eczema, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Has over 13 years of clinical experience in both an acute and community-based setting at the National Health Service. She has expertise in a range of health conditions and has a special interest in personal leadership empowerment and Health Literacy. She has also dedicated the last 7 years to pioneering the nutrition landscape in Sickle Cell Disease. Claudine has published a number of articles on the topic and has authored the world’s first National Nutrition Standards for Sickle Cell, commissioned by the Sickle Cell Society, and was the keynote speaker for the inaugural Nutrition in Sickle Cell Conference in London. She is also leading a Schools Education and Awareness Campaign about sickle cell and nutrition across London.
