Title: “Jaundice” Sharpie, Ink Joy Pen, Chalk Pastel, and Glitter Paint on 12×16 Canvas Sketch 2022, Including written excerpt from, “You Don’t Look Like You Have Sickle Cell” c. 2019
-The left eye of the piece has jaundice and the right eye of the canvas sketch is crying *bloodied* sickled tears. Created initially for my creative research project, “Sickle Cell Anatomy: The Silenced Skeleton” which illustrates the painful, isolating, and misunderstood experiences of the medical body parts of those living with Sickle Cell. This piece was displayed at my 5th art showcase c. Feb 2023. Excerpt on canvas: “My eyes are yellow Because they glow in the dark. Although Jaundice was so bright, it made me see depths of darkness”
About the Artist: Ayoola Olubukola is a multimedia expressionist, published poet, self-titled griot, Sickle Cell community advocate, and the owner of Healing Through Artistic Mediums LLC. As a prolific creative who centers vulnerability and catharsis within differing creative mediums, her work dissects elements of intergenerational trauma, cultural identities, and medical experiences through narrative performances. A.O.Catharsis is Olubukola’s artist tag and her poet persona—Her Silence—speaks from a need of Catharsis in our healing communities. Being a Yoruba first daughter fuels her artistry as she found her voice from a place of solitude and strength. Olubukola provides art and poetry commissions, poetry editing, canvas prints, therapeutic workshop sessions, a mentorship program, and other services within her art business, Healing Through Artistic Mediums LLC. Her holistic mediums highlight the importance of intentional healing work as artistic autonomy for the advocacy of adult mental health and individuals with Sickle Cell.
